 Searchlight Christian Resources

Store Sign very high contrast

WELCOME to Searchlight Christian Books. We’re located at 884 Division Street in Cobourg (a town about halfway between Oshawa and Belleville) just 2 minutes (three quick traffic lights) south of the 401. Our store is a full service Christian Bookstore, that is, we carry everything the big stores have, maybe just not so many copies. We’re been 23 years in Cobourg, but the business history of Searchlight goes back another 20 years before that.

We’re also a Christian book outlet store. About 75% of the books we receive are red-tagged bargain books, consisting of a mixture of publisher overstock and remainders. That means about half of our sale books are actually still in print at regular price elsewhere. To make the deal even more sweet, we offer an instant rewards program of Buy-4-Get-1-Free (lowest price items in iteach grouping of five drops out.)

What to expect: Cobourg is a small town which makes us a small town store. Two aisles at the front, three in the middle and one at the back. However, our store is packed with books. Specialty areas include fiction, family life, marriage and family issues, apologetics, children’s picture books; and we also have giftware, DVDs, greeting cards, boxed cards and a very up-to-date selection of various styles of Christian music on CD.  This website is simply a random, representative sample of what we carry.

For those who came looking for directions to the bookstore, or were re-directed from Searchlightbooks.ca here’s a map showing where we are at 884 Division Street (on the east side) in Cobourg. We’re at the front of the building.

Taking the 401? From points west (Port Hope, Bowmanville, Oshawa, etc.) take exit 474-A. From the east (Brighton, Trenton, Belleville, Kingston, etc.) take exit 474 and turn left. Baltimore road becomes Division Street. The blue line on the map below is Highway 401.

There’s a new devotional book for kids that I think is going to be a bestseller as we head towards Christmas.

Amazing Stories for Young Believers contains 366 devotions for children ages 8-12. Through the amazing stories about the Bible characters like Samson and Daniel, and the great things they did for God, children will learn valuable life lessons to apply to their own lives. Each day’s devotion gives practical application based on a specific passage from Scripture, as well as another Scripture verse that reinforces the lesson for the day. A topical index at the back of the book arranges devotions according to themes.

Both books are now in stock in international paperback editions not sold by U.S. stores and websites; only $19.99

NOW IN STOCK! Scotland’s Sheila Walsh was a Christian Music singer in the UK whose stage shows included spectacular lighting and theatrics. She emigrated to the United States where she turned up as the co-host of The 700 Club. This led to her writing and speaking career, and today she is the co-host of Life Today (James & Betty Robison). She is one of our consistently bestselling authors whose titles occupy two shelves on our spinning rack at the front of the store.

Publisher Marketing:

We’ve all experienced that moment where we wish we could start all over again. Failed marriages, lost friends, addictions, lost jobs. This is not the life we imagined. Yesterday can sometimes leave us stuck, sad, shamed, scared, and searching. Sheila Walsh encourages readers to face the pain head on and then start again, from right where they are. She shares that when she discovered “I’m not good enough and I’m good with that,” everything started to change. In It’s Okay Not to Be Okay, Walsh helps women overcome the same old rut of struggles and pain by changing the way they think about God, themselves, and their everyday lives. She shares practical, doable, daily strategies that will help women move forward one step at a time knowing God will never let them down.

Not everything at Searchlight is fun and games. Sometimes people are facing difficult circumstances and challenges and are looking for a resource which can come alongside them in their situation and offer insight and hope. Books like this one are available in stock or by special order. If one title isn’t exactly what’s required, we can fine tune the request to locate something more helpful. (This one, a new release, is expected soon.)

New Hardcover Discount Prices

Our price

Increasingly, when you visit our store, you’ll see the words “Our Price” on hardcover books. These discounts are either offered by the store or supported by some of our publishers. They’re not red tags because they’re not part of the Buy-4-get-1-Free but they represent our best attempt to remain competitive and save you money on books we are unable to source in paperback at this time. If a hardcover doesn’t have this new pricing, please feel free to ask if it’s possible.

Christine Caine - Unexpected

Unexpected: Leave Fear Behind, Move Forward in Faith, Embrace the Adventure by Christine Caine is now in stock in an international paperback edition not sold by U.S. stores and websites.

Things to know about Karen Kingsbury’s To The Moon and Back:

• No, it’s not a children’s book; It’s Baxter Family #3

• Publisher calls it, “a pleasing tale of heartache.” Wait, what?

We get a lot of requests for New Testaments in an easy-to-read type size. The solution has been on our shelves all along; the NLT Travelers Devotional Bible New Testament. These are beautiful faux-leather editions. Reg. up to $21.99; available in various colours, now only $11.99.

We support Canadian authors…especially when they are also customers of our store. Judith is from Peterborough and this book features colour on many pages. The target audience is young adults, but older people are reading it as well. Now in stock at Searchlight.

••• Sky Scrapers is about the adventure of a lifetime for Sam and Josh, who are doing research for a high school science fair on astronomy. The information comes to them by a mysterious teacher, who takes them zooming through the universe in a unique way to learn about the purpose of stars, comets, and more that inhabit the heavens.

Later when at university, they have another series of adventures that finds them moving through time from Adam’s arrival on earth to Abram’s tent in the desert. Both of these thrilling events have a purpose to reveal how the heavens declare the glory of God and how this information has changed down through the ages.

This is a story for all ages to enjoy, and maybe even to look at the stars in the heavens in a different way.

worship resources

Know someone who serves in music leadership at a local church? The two paperbacks on the left and right offer different approaches to worship leadership. The hymnbook in the middle contains a number of modern hymns with a rich doctrinal substance. For hardcore keyboard players, We also have the spiral edition of this book.

Amid a culture that is both fascinated by spirituality and inundated by a dizzying variety of options for pursuing it, many Christians long for a deeper, more historically rooted spiritual life.

General editor Bruce Demarest presents an invaluable resource for study and comparison of the major Christian perspectives on spiritual formation.

Chapters on Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Evangelicalism, and Liberal Protestantism, collected side-by-side, easily allow for the beliefs and emphases of the viewpoints to be thoughtfully considered, and each proponent’s chapter is followed by responses from the other three.

Contributors

  • Brad Nassif (Eastern Orthodoxy)
  • Scott Hahn (Roman Catholicism)
  • Evan Howard (Evangelicalism)
  • Joe Driskill (Liberal Protestantism)

The Boy Who Sang for the Angels by Jim Cantelon

This book was featured on 100 Huntley Street and immediately sold out everywhere. We were able to get some at the last minute. It’s a children’s book for 7-12 years of age. However, it will be read by “children” of all ages because of its universal appeal. Set in Europe in the mid-18th century, the story resonates with local color, music, cathedrals, and a touching account of the plight of compelling orphaned children facing both the harshness and the unexpected blessings of life. Its magic is irresistible. 48 pages; large format; only $10.99. Canadian author James Cantelon is a pastor, broadcaster, and the founder of “WOW”(Working for Orphans and Widows) a ministry to orphans and widows impacted by the HIV and AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. He is also founder of King of Kings Church in Jerusalem, Israel. He has three best-selling books to his credit, Theology for Non-Theologians, When God Stood Up (Harper/Collins), and Letters to Jess and Kate (Oliver Nelson).  He and his wife Kathryn live in Burlington, Ontario.

If you like the Wow! CDs but are looking for something a little more laid back musically, there’s this:

We’re completely restocked on nearly 200 titles from Rose Publishing.
• Over 120 laminated pamphlets inform you on every aspect of the Bible and Christianity.
• Almost 80 booklets from June Hunt deal with personal and relational problems which happen in life.
The booklets and pamphlets are $5.50 if you buy one, but the prices immediately decrease the more you purchase.

Spanish - Turn Your Vacation Trip into a Missions Trip

Heading to Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, or any other Spanish-speaking country this winter?? Turn your vacation trip into a mission trip by leaving Spanish New Testaments and Bible promise books for hotel housekeeping staff; tour guides; and people you meet at local markets. We keep about 20-30 of these on hand at any given time; more can be easily ordered.

Got a fish on your car?

There’s still some great weather left to put a fish symbol on the back of your car. The ickthus — ΙΧΘΥΣ — (pronounced ‘ickthoos’) a 2nd – 4th Century symbol of the early church is both a play on the Greek word for fish, and is also an acronym or if you prefer, an acrostic.

► Iota “Ι” is the first letter of Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς), Greek for “Jesus”.
► Chi “Χ” is the first letter of Christos (Χριστός), Greek for “anointed” (of the Lord).
► Theta “Θ” is the first letter of Theou (Θεοῦ), Greek for “God’s”, the genitive case of Θεóς, Theos, Greek for “God”.
► Upsilon “Υ” is the first letter of (h)yios (Yἱός), Greek for “Son”.
► Sigma “Σ” is the first letter of sōtēr (Σωτήρ), Greek for “Saviour”.

The symbols are available plain or with the Greek letters, but if you choose the latter, make sure it’s pointing the right way. The price is $5.99; unchanged in over ten years. Apply it to a clean surface on a day that’s not too hot and not too cold.
There are many videos (including some from the many detractors) online concerning the symbol — not to mention parody versions — but for a simple, straightforward understanding, watch this Anglican priest’s 2-minute explanation.

TOTE BAGS!

We want our customers to consider an alternative to the traditional gift bag. For the same money — sometimes even less — you can give a plastic or canvas tote bag which becomes a second gift. We now have twenty different designs in stock. There’s a mix of $2.99 and $3.99 styles. If you wish, you can add tissue as you would with a gift bag. Drop by and we think you’ll agree that a durable, re-usable wrapping makes for a better gift-giving experience overall.

These wooden crosses make a great bulk purchase item:

The little wooden cross pendants (necklaces) are back and they’re still a great bargain; a bestseller at Searchlight for years. Great gifts for tweens, teens and young adults; though not recommended for small children. If you need a quantity, let us know so we have time to string them.

Bibles in many Languages:

We don’t have all the languages in the above image, but we do have in stock Bibles and/or other Christian literature in Spanish, Arabic, German, Chinese (trad.), Chinese (simplified), Italian, French, Tagalog, Persian, Korean, Greek (contemporary), Greek (classical), Japanese, Hindi and others, with access to about 100 more.

Author of The Harbinger

Jonathan Cahn is back with a new title, The Paradigm: The Ancient Blueprint that Holds the Mystery of Our Times.

Jonathan Cahn, who caused an international stir with his New York Times best-selling book The Harbinger, will take you from the ancient Middle East to the news of the modern world on a journey you will never forget. You may never see your world the same way again.

Our price is only $16.99 CDN.

(re)Union: The Good News of Jesus for Seekers, Saints, and Sinners by Bruxy Cavey

International paperback edition! Not available from U.S. online vendors

You’ve got a friend who you’d like to see cross the line of faith. You want to sit down and be able to answer all their questions in a casual, non-threatening manner. Problem is, there’s aspects of your Christian pilgrimage that have left you less than articulate on various core doctrines. If only you had another friend who could join you at the coffee shop to make Christianity make sense.

Enter Bruxy Cavey [KAY-vee] teaching pastor at The Meeting House, an alternative, multi-site congregation in the greater Toronto area described as both “church for people who aren’t into church,” and also as “Canada’s fastest growing church network.” It’s been a decade since his 2007 title with NavPress, The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus.  Since then he’s become more strongly alligned with his tribe, the Brethren in Christ and more identified with pacifist denominations which clearly are a minority in the United States.

Years later, that irreligious message of Jesus turns up in Bruxy’s “The Gospel in 30 Words” which forms the core of the book.

staircase specials august 17

The display opposite the checkout counter, which I call “The staircase” probably looks the same to many of you week in, week out. Unless you take the time to really look. Hebraic Roots and Messianic Miracles (above, left) is an awesome teaching that will leave you saying, “Wow!” 11 stories, 4 miracles. Other titles also available.

Now available: Faith and Redemption board game

Faith and Redemption is a Christian game where players gain followers throughout their epic journey from the Garden of Eden to Judgment Day. As players gain followers, they are granted prayers and miracles that help them overcome the ever-present temptation of sin.

Although Faith and Redemption represents a fallen world, redemption is always possible and forgiveness is never more than a prayer away.

Faith and Redemption is a multi-part roll-and-move Christian game that differs from the traditional approach towards religious games. Most other Christian games are either trivia or simply Bible versions of existing games. Faith and Redemption strives to create a unique experience based on the teachings of the Bible.

Originally published at $34.99, we have these on sale now for due to supplier restriction price cannot be advertised online see store for pricing

You won’t find this T-shirt at other Christian bookstores: “Jesus Loves You — But I’m His Favorite.” Theologically unsound for sure, but we knew they’d be fun to have at the store. Five adult sizes only (though we bought some small ones for older kids) in white for $22.99.

We did it! We listed all of our “staircase” and “red sign” sale titles so you can browse the list before you arrive. To see the list, click the image above or click this link.  Remember our motto:

Information you need,
by authors who are proven,
from publishers we trust,

Support Independent Bookstores

Did you know that getting the cheapest deal sometimes isn’t the best deal? At Searchlight, we work hard to keep prices low, but we work even harder to ensure you have an amazing experience with us. We want to see your life changed by God’s power and that’s why we run this bookstore, and quite frankly, that’s something that Amazon, iTunes or Netflix can never offer.

While we too appreciate the convenience and low cost that many big corporate retailers can provide, there are some incredible things that happen when you shop locally. Consider the following:

  • We are passionate about transformation and have become experts in the kinds of teaching and music that can bring change in your life.
  • The products we sell are filtered before they hit our shelves, and if something isn’t right for your doctrinal perspective, we’ll let you know ahead of time.
  • You get to see, touch, feel; interact with the product before you buy.
  • We’re also customers. Each of our staff are readers and music buyers.
  • We enhance the community, by providing distinctive options in our part of the world.
  • We support the local economy, your money stays here in Canada, and we hire local staff and use local tradespeople.
  • Surprise! You never know you’ll meet at the store.  You never know what resources you’ll find.
  • The owners don’t take a salary.  No one’s pockets are being lined when you shop here, we just sow everything back into the store. We also frequently bring in products that are 100% fundraisers such as God Enters Stage Left.

Please consider supporting Searchlight as your local Christian bookstore, and encourage others to think about the many benefits of buying local.

Store News from our Facebook Page:

Recently we began a trial period of offering fulfillment for orders carts at CBD for those of you who are familiar with them.  (Hey, if they’re going to run ads on our website, it seems only fair…)

You can add items to a CBD cart, and then have the order completed by Searchlight. Simply add items and when you’re ready, instead of clearing the order through them, copy and paste the entire cart into an email and forward it to searchlightbooks@gmail.com and we will do the rest.

Remember, CBD’s shipping cost to Canada is 25% and the current exchange rate on the U.S. dollar at the bank is about 33%. This means the CBD price in Canadian dollars is 1.708% higher than what you see on-screen. In some cases, Searchlight everyday pricing may work out cheaper, and if that happens, we’ll give you the lower of the two prices.

Be sure to add a phone number where we can reach you when your order is complete. Also, please note that some CBD specials are limited time offers; let us know if you know that to be the case.

Although we follow a business model, we consider ourselves one of several parachurch ministries operating in our community. PRAYER is always needed, and while you’re remembering us, pray for these ministries operating in our area:

* New Life Girls Home (Consecon, Ontario)
* YFC National; Global Engagement (Michele Shutt)
* The Gideons

* Camp IAWAH (two hours away — north of Kingston — used by area churches for retreats)

From January to the end of October, Searchlight is a drop-off point for Christian Salvage Mission of Hamilton, Ontario. Overseas missionaries and English-speaking indigenous workers are hungry for materials you or your church are no longer using including: used Christian books, Bibles, hymnbooks Sunday School curriculum, devotional booklets, etc.

From November 1st to December 31st, please only bring in CSM donations on days Paul is working — so they can transferred straight to his car — or arrange for pickup.

S E A R C H L I G H T  —  Now in our 23rd YEAR IN COBOURG — Over 80% of our book intake is (a) publisher overstock and (b) remainder books.   Each title is hand-picked.   Despite this, with the other 20% we’re still able to stock almost all of the Top 100 Christian Fiction and Top 100 Christian Non-Fiction titles. Our “house specialty” is apologetics!

Make a day of it in Cobourg: Here’s the town’s official tourism website, and the municipal website. (And two for neighbouring Port Hope: tourism, municipality.)

Cobourg’s MISSION THRIFT STORE is at 975 Elgin Street West, in the plaza on the southwest corner of Burnham and Elgin St. W.  (289) 252-2299
