Store Sign very high contrast

WELCOME to Searchlight Christian Resources. We’re located at 884 Division Street in Cobourg (a town about halfway between Oshawa and Belleville) just 2 minutes (three quick traffic lights) south of the 401. Our store is a full service Christian Bookstore, that is, we carry everything the big stores have, maybe just not so many copies. We’ve been 24 years in Cobourg, but the business history of Searchlight goes back another 20 years before that.

We’re also a Christian book outlet store. About 75% of the books we receive are red-tagged bargain books, consisting of a mixture of publisher overstock and remainders. That means about half of our sale books are actually still in print at regular price elsewhere. To make the deal even more sweet, we offer an instant rewards program of Buy-4-Get-1-Free (lowest price items in each grouping of five drops out.)

What to expect: Cobourg is a small town which makes us a small town store. Two aisles at the front, three in the middle and one at the back. However, our store is packed with books. Specialty areas include fiction, family life, marriage and family issues, apologetics, children’s picture books; and we also have giftware, DVDs, greeting cards, boxed cards and a very up-to-date selection of various styles of Christian music on CD.  This website is simply a random, representative sample of what we carry.

New to the area and checking out local churches? Visit our Local Church Directory. If that leaves you with questions, drop by the store and ask!

New! Don’t miss a thing! Subscribe to our email newsletter, just click this link

PHONE: Give us a call at 905 372 5519 during business hours and we’ll tell you more. Out of area call us at 800 210 5661.

For those who came looking for directions to the bookstore, or were re-directed from here’s a map showing where we are (red X at bottom) at 884 Division Street (on the east side) in Cobourg. We’re at the front of the building.

Taking the 401? From points west (Port Hope, Bowmanville, Oshawa, etc.) take exit 474-A. From the east (Brighton, Trenton, Belleville, Kingston, etc.) take exit 474 and turn left. Baltimore road becomes Division Street. The blue line on the map below is Highway 401.

Searchlight offers more maps per website than any other bookstore.

One of Port Hope’s best kept secrets happens December 14th and 15th this year. The Christmas Story is an indoor version of The Bethlehem Walk; the same great story presented as a pageant with an equal number of volunteers plus the St. John’s Anglican Church choir. Since we couldn’t verify this before publishing, the Saturday event is usually at 5:00 PM and the last few years has included an optional spaghetti dinner following the production. The Sunday event is at 7:00 PM. Admission is free with an offering received. The church is located on Pine Street in Port Hope.

To our friends in Peterborough who were at the Brian Doerksen concert last month: We’ve secured an ample supply of the new Shiyr Poets CD, Volume Three which Brian sold out of. This continuing series features the Psalms set to music, this one is Psalm 21 to Psalm 30. Buy the entire set and take $1 off each.

Among the best selling items in the store are these board books for little ones. $10.99 – $12.99. Many of them also have a corresponding larger picture book for older children, $19.99 – $21.99. These are constantly being restocked and our located in both our children’s book area and our children’s gift area.

NOW AVAILABLE in paperback.

Lee Strobel writes: “I wish this book had been around when I was an atheist and started to seek God. It’s a no-nonsense, practical, and insightful guide that will help all those on a quest for spiritual truth. If you’re investigating whether there’s any substance to the Christian faith, you must read this important book.”

Why should the children have all the good Bible stories? Apparently enough adults spoke up and The Jesus Storybook Bible — in which “every story whispers His name” and points to the coming saviour — is now available in an adult, text-only edition titled The Story of God’s Love For You. We have this in paperback, hardcover and leather gift edition along with four different editions of the children’s version.

Customers: Here is a note regarding the R-rating:

From FOX News:

The one thing the producers of the movie “Unplanned” had not planned on was the film getting an R rating…It seems pretty odd that a movie with no foul language, no gratuitous sex, no violence, no naked bodies, no wild shootings or car chases racking up dead bodies and mangled vehicles would get a rating equal to movies like “Kill Bill,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Die Hard.” … According to its website, the MPAA rates a move R because it “contains some adult material,” and, that “parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.”

When evil in its purest form is unleashed on the world, she and others from their religious community are already hidden deep in the hills of Tennessee, abiding by every rule that will keep them safe, pure–and alive. As long as they stay there, behind the red perimeter.

Her older brother’s questions and the arrival of the first outsiders she’s seen in a decade set in motion events that will question everything Grace has built her life on. Enemies rise on all sides–but who is the real enemy? And what will it cost her to uncover the truth?

Based on John Bunyan’s epic masterpiece, The Pilgrim’s Progress is one of the most popular books of all time, and one of the most important stories of our faith! Second to the Bible in total copies and translations, the story was written by John Bunyan, a pastor imprisoned for sharing his faith. This powerful allegory helps families understand the spiritual journey is the most important journey in life, as well as the importance of sticking to the path, even when the journey gets difficult. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Because we’ve worked in advocacy for the poor, we’re very sensitive to how the retail economy can impact low income families, especially MULTI deals where you get a better price, but only if you buy more units. Last month we realized that our longstanding “Buy-4-Get-1-Free” on our outlet books was no different. So starting today, and every day, here’s a new alternative: “Buy-2-Get-1-At-Half Price.” I hope that helps! Applies to all red-tag books (not Bibles) unless marked ‘net’ or ‘net price.’

Defying Jihad by Esther Ahmad and Craig Borlase

► It was the final chance to win not only the love of Allah, but the love of her father. Esther took a deep breath and raised her hand in the air. Defying Jihad is the true story of a girl growing up under radical Islamic rule, trained to believe her ultimate purpose was to serve Allah by dying as a jihadist. But two nights before she was to leave forever, she had a dream… (paperback from Tyndale House Publishing)

Prayer Cubes

Prayer Cubes are a fun — as in don’t take this practice too seriously — novelty product. You roll the prayer cube and pray the cube which comes up on top. The most popular of the three styles is “Mealtime Prayers.” The prayers themselves are okay, it’s just that “rolling the dice” isn’t how most of us want to approach talking to God. This also makes a great gag gift for the academic or theologian whose idea of prayer is slightly more scholarly…
…And they’re only $2.99.

■ NFL Football is back! This makes a great gift for a guy!

ESV Value Edition.
Reg. $27.99. Or so they said. One of our suppliers totally and completely misrepresented the “value” of this value edition. So we’re putting these on for sale at $18.99, taking the hit on them and paying the difference out of our own pockets to make them a true comparative “value.” This is ideal if you’d like to own a copy of the ESV text for comparison purposes but don’t wish to buy a leather-bound edition or the study edition.

Keeping Love Alive

The book Keeping Love Alive as Memories Fade: The 5 Love Languages and the Alzheimer’s Journey has been very helpful to many of our customers when one partner in a marriage experiences memory challenges with age. The innovative application of the five love languages creates an entirely new way to touch the lives of the millions who have Alzheimer’s, as well as the three-times-that-number who serve as caregivers. At its heart, this book is about how love gently lifts a corner of dementia’s dark curtain to cultivate an emotional connection amid memory loss.

    “Do you feel lost in a difficult season, wondering, ‘GOD, WHERE ARE YOU?!’ Perhaps you heard God speak, but now He seems silent. Maybe you moved forward in faith, but now His presence is nowhere to be found. Welcome to the wilderness the place between receiving a promise from God and seeing it come to pass.
     But here’s the good news―this is no purposeless wasteland. God uses the wilderness to prepare and equip you for your destiny―that is, if you navigate it correctly…”

Fire Will Strike the Earth

• Now available at Searchlight: A prophetic message translated by local author and former missionary Henry Buchegger.
• Henry published this at great personal cost, and Searchlight is relinquishing much of our normal retail margin to help out.
“In 1984 in Mexico City, the message in this book, written in Spanish on loose-leaf paper, was handed to me by a stranger, urging me to pass it on to as many people who might want it. She offered this message to me freely, and I gladly received it. I took the text home and translated it into English. Based on the Bible, this message is a wake-up call to all of humanity from a loving God. Thirty years ago the message didn’t seem as urgent to me as it clearly is today. Whether we realize it or not, the beginnings of God’s judgements on earth are already in progress…”

As more and more people are diagnosed with ADHD, and the internet erodes the attention span of the rest of us, I would expect books which offer smaller bites are an ideal reading retreat in a distracted world. What if there were simply a collection of articles which offered some thought-provoking insights into a somewhat random collection of topics? What if, in your own busyness you could consider a faith-focused subject with a three or four minute investment?

Not Dressed for the Occasion by Durham Region pastor Ron Harris (with Christine Winter) is one such book. The 71 articles are gathered here in a form the author says, “has no beginning and no end.” You can jump in anywhere and read as many or as few as time permits. The articles are somewhat devotional in nature — think something 3 to 5 times longer than Our Daily Bread, or The Upper Room — which allows more space to anchor the reading in more than one scripture text reference. Each piece is clearly written from a pastor’s heart.  Paperback, $17.99, in stock.

We want our customers to consider an alternative to the traditional gift bag. For the same money — sometimes even less — you can give a plastic or canvas tote bag which becomes a second gift. We now have thirty-five different designs in stock. Most are only $3.99 with some at $4.99 to $8.99 If you wish, you can add tissue as you would with a gift bag.

The Bible Book explores the ideas and beliefs key to the teachings of the most widely printed religious book of all time.

This highly visual, really BIG, 352-page book highlights more than 100 of the most important Biblical passages and explains their significance. Profiles of primary figures–from Adam and Eve, to Peter and Paul–and places of the Bible, such as Jerusalem and Rome, add context to the scriptures. Theological concepts, such as the Trinity, God’s omnipresence, and the importance of Jesus’ death, are explained in detail. Infographics illuminate the most significant concepts clearly and simply.

The Bible Book is perfect for anyone with an interest in religion and the foundational text of Christianity and Judaism.

(re)Union: The Good News of Jesus for Seekers, Saints, and Sinners by Bruxy Cavey

International paperback edition! Not available from U.S. online vendors

You’ve got a friend who you’d like to see cross the line of faith. You want to sit down and be able to answer all their questions in a casual, non-threatening manner. Problem is, there’s aspects of your Christian pilgrimage that have left you less than articulate on various core doctrines. If only you had another friend who could join you at the coffee shop to make Christianity make sense.

Enter Bruxy Cavey [KAY-vee] teaching pastor at The Meeting House, an alternative, multi-site congregation in the greater Toronto area described as both “church for people who aren’t into church,” and also as “Canada’s fastest growing church network.” It’s been a decade since his 2007 title with NavPress, The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus.  Since then he’s become more strongly alligned with his tribe, the Brethren in Christ and more identified with pacifist denominations which clearly are a minority in the United States.

Years later, that irreligious message of Jesus turns up in Bruxy’s “The Gospel in 30 Words” which forms the core of the book.

Support Independent Bookstores

Did you know that getting the cheapest deal sometimes isn’t the best deal? At Searchlight, we work hard to keep prices low, but we work even harder to ensure you have an amazing experience with us. We want to see your life changed by God’s power and that’s why we run this bookstore, and quite frankly, that’s something that Amazon, iTunes or Netflix can never offer.

While we too appreciate the convenience and low cost that many big corporate retailers can provide, there are some incredible things that happen when you shop locally. Consider the following:

  • We are passionate about transformation and have become experts in the kinds of teaching and music that can bring change in your life.
  • The products we sell are filtered before they hit our shelves, and if something isn’t right for your doctrinal perspective, we’ll let you know ahead of time.
  • You get to see, touch, feel; interact with the product before you buy.
  • We’re also customers. Each of our staff are readers and music buyers.
  • We enhance the community, by providing distinctive options in our part of the world.
  • We support the local economy, your money stays here in Canada, and we hire local staff and use local tradespeople.
  • Surprise! You never know you’ll meet at the store.  You never know what resources you’ll find.
  • The owners don’t take a salary.  No one’s pockets are being lined when you shop here, we just sow everything back into the store. We also frequently bring in products that are 100% fundraisers such as God Enters Stage Left.

Please consider supporting Searchlight as your local Christian bookstore, and encourage others to think about the many benefits of buying local.

We are the Church in the marketplace.

For church libraries we have a program called 20/200/20 which saves your church money on purchases of 20 in-stock books or $200 worth of in-stock books; or on orders for 20 titles or orders of $200 or more. For our local churches, we have a program called WebMatch which competes aggressively with the best online sellers have to offer.

For Paul’s blogs visit Thinking Out Loud and Christianity 201.

For ChristianBook customers:

Recently we began a trial period of offering fulfilment for orders carts at ChristianBook for those of you who are familiar with them.  (Hey, if they’re going to run ads on our website, it seems only fair…)

You can add items to a ChristianBook cart, and then have the order completed by Searchlight. Simply add items and when you’re ready, instead of clearing the order through them, copy and paste the entire cart into an email and forward it to and we will do the rest.

Remember, CBD’s shipping cost to Canada is 25% and the current exchange rate on the U.S. dollar at the bank is about 34%. This means the CBD price in Canadian dollars is 1.718% higher than what you see on-screen. In some cases, Searchlight everyday pricing may work out cheaper, and if that happens, we’ll give you the lower of the two prices.

Be sure to add a phone number where we can reach you when your order is complete. Also, please note that some CBD specials are limited time offers.

Although we follow a business model, we consider ourselves one of several parachurch ministries operating in our community. PRAYER is always needed, and while you’re remembering us, pray for these ministries operating in our area:

* Northumberland Youth For Christ / Northumberland Youth Unlimited
* Christian Horizons
* Salvation Army Family Services
* Northumberland Christian School
* Better Together Refugee Project
* UCB Radio in Cobourg and Belleville
* Mission Canada (Jeff Snow) outreach to UOIT/Durham College
* Lakeshore Pentecostal Camp
* New Life Girls Home (Consecon, Ontario)
* YFC National; Global Engagement (Michele Shutt)
* Packed With Love (outreach of Ritson Road Alliance, Oshawa)
* Love in Action
* Camp IAWAH (two hours away — north of Kingston — used by area churches for retreats)

Searchlight is a drop-off point for Christian Salvage Mission of Hamilton, Ontario. Overseas missionaries and English-speaking indigenous workers are hungry for materials you or your church are no longer using including: used Christian books, Bibles, hymnbooks Sunday School curriculum, devotional booklets, etc. Contact us ahead if you have a larger collection as in November and December we are space-challenged!
