WELCOME to Searchlight Christian Resources. We’re located at 884 Division Street in Cobourg (a town about halfway between Oshawa and Belleville) just 2 minutes (three quick traffic lights) south of the 401. Our store is a full service Christian Bookstore, that is, we carry everything the big stores have, maybe just not so many copies. We’ve been 25 years in Cobourg, but the business history of Searchlight goes back another 20 years before that.

We’re also a Christian book outlet store. About 75% of the books we receive are red-tagged bargain books, consisting of a mixture of publisher overstock and remainders. That means about half of our sale books are actually still in print at regular price elsewhere. To make the deal even more sweet, we offer an instant rewards program of Buy-4-Get-1-Free (lowest price items in each grouping of five drops out.)

What to expect: Cobourg is a small town which makes us a small town store. Two aisles at the front, three in the middle and one at the back. However, our store is packed with books. Specialty areas include fiction, family life, marriage and family issues, apologetics, children’s picture books; and we also have giftware, DVDs, greeting cards, boxed cards and a very up-to-date selection of various styles of Christian music on CD. This website is simply a random, representative sample of what we carry.

More churches are meeting on June 20th.

Important Update re. FNV New Testament:

We’ve had a number of people inquire about this item. The release date is now mid-to-late August. The more people who pre-order, the better the price we can offer.

The First Nations Version (FNV) recounts the Creator’s Story—the Christian Scriptures—following the tradition of Native storytellers’ oral cultures. While remaining faithful to the original language of the New Testament, the FNV is a dynamic equivalence translation that captures the simplicity, clarity, and beauty of Native storytellers in English.

This New Testament will be available in both paperback (upper image) and hardcover (lower image) at Canadian list prices of $26.99 and $46.99 respectively.

Sample text:
“The Great Spirit loves this world of human beings so deeply he gave us his Son—the only Son who fully represents him. All who trust in him and his way will not come to a bad end, but will have the life of the world to come that never fades—full of beauty and harmony. Creator did not send his Son to decide against the people of this world, but to set them free from the worthless ways of the world.” John 3:16-17

With First Nations communities nearby in Alderville. Curve Lake and Deseronto, we feel this will be an important resource in our area. Initial orders for this item have been quantity orders, and the more people who pre-order, the better price we hope to be able to obtain from Inter-Varsity Press (IVP).

Or you might be, on a personal level, dealing with patriarchy in the church. Kristin Du Mez (pronounced doo•MAY) has written the book most talked about by pastors and leaders over the past year and it’s now in paperback. $24.99.

In How (Not) to Read the Bible, pastor and bestselling author Dan Kimball tackles one of the most pressing apologetic challenges of the twenty-first-century church–how do we read and interpret the Bible? Kimball introduces several critical principles to utilize when you open a Bible or read a verse. Then, he looks at five of the most common challenges that arise when people read the Bible today, including: the relationship between science and the Bible, the violence we find in the Bible, the treatment of women in the Bible, the odd and strange commands we find in the Bible, and the Bible’s controversial claim that there is only one way to know God. Kimball highlights several of the most common passages people find objectionable and shows readers how to correctly interpret them.

Praying Women: How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say – new from Sheila Walsh.

If you find yourself easily distracted when you pray, here are practical, biblically based tips to help you ignite your conversation with the Lord.

Although Sheila has written many books, she shared that none of her books have impacted her more personally than Praying Women. The new book is a departure from Sheila’s previous books, offering very practical steps to pray in the midst of storms, celebrations, trials and the everyday challenges of life. With her signature honesty, vulnerability, and encouraging spirit, Sheila uses personal stories, extensive research and biblical teachings to show that God is not looking for perfect words when praying or perfect people.

New from N.T. Wright:

In this follow-up to Simply Christian, today’s leading Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and acclaimed author uses the Gospel of John to reveal how Christianity presents a compelling and relevant explanation for our world.

N. T. Wright argues that every world view must explain seven “signposts,” indicators inherent to humanity: Justice, Spirituality, Relationships, Beauty, Freedom, Truth, and Power.

He contends that if we do not live up to these ideals, our societies and individual lives become unbalanced, creating anger and frustration—negative emotions that divide us from ourselves and from God. Using the Gospel of John, Wright shows how Christianity defines each signpost and illuminates why we so often see them as being “broken” and unattainable.

Beth Moore - Undoing of Saint Silvanus

Beth Moore’s FICTION title: Reg. $23.99; Sale $9.99

The Undoing of Saint Silvanus is a far cry from her nonfiction work, but faith still played a major role in the writing process, according to Beth Moore.

Located in New Orléans, Saint Silvanus was originally built during the 1800s as a church and was later converted to an apartment complex now run by Jillian’s estranged grandmother. While in town attending her father’s funeral, she meets an eclectic group of tenants from the building. As strange things begin happening, she finds out her father was actually murdered

It’s nearly 500 pages of Southern mystery and down-home colloquialism, reflecting Moore’s love of New Orleans.

The New Testament in Its World is your passageway from the twenty-first century to the era of Jesus and the first Christians. A highly-readable, one-volume introduction placing the entire New Testament and early Christianity in its original context, it is the only such work by distinguished scholar and author N. T. (Tom) Wright.

An ideal guide for students, The New Testament in Its World addresses the many difficult questions faced by those studying early Christianity. Both large and small, these questions include:

  • What is the purpose of the New Testament?
  • What was the first-century understanding of the kingdom?
  • What is the real meaning of the resurrection in its original context?
  • What really were the Gospels?
  • Who was Paul and why are his letters so controversial?
  • As twenty-first-century people, how do we recover the excitement of what it was like to live as Christians in the first or second centuries?

In short, The New Testament in Its World brings together decades of ground-breaking research, writing, and teaching into one volume that will open readers’ eyes to the larger world of the New Testament. It presents the New Testament books as historical, literary, and social phenomena located in the world of Second Temple Judaism, amidst Greco-Roman politics and culture, and within early Christianity.

Prayer Cubes

Prayer Cubes are a fun — as in don’t take this practice too seriously — novelty product. You roll the prayer cube and pray the cube which comes up on top. The most popular of the three styles is “Mealtime Prayers.” The prayers themselves are okay, it’s just that “rolling the dice” isn’t how most of us want to approach talking to God. This also makes a great gag gift for the academic or theologian whose idea of prayer is slightly more scholarly…
…And they’re only $2.99.

“Do you feel lost in a difficult season, wondering, ‘GOD, WHERE ARE YOU?!’ Perhaps you heard God speak, but now He seems silent. Maybe you moved forward in faith, but now His presence is nowhere to be found. Welcome to the wilderness the place between receiving a promise from God and seeing it come to pass.
But here’s the good news―this is no purposeless wasteland. God uses the wilderness to prepare and equip you for your destiny―that is, if you navigate it correctly…”

• Now available at Searchlight: A prophetic message translated by local author and former missionary Henry Buchegger.
“In 1984 in Mexico City, the message in this book, written in Spanish on loose-leaf paper, was handed to me by a stranger, urging me to pass it on to as many people who might want it. She offered this message to me freely, and I gladly received it. I took the text home and translated it into English. Based on the Bible, this message is a wake-up call to all of humanity from a loving God. Thirty years ago the message didn’t seem as urgent to me as it clearly is today.”

As more and more people are diagnosed with ADHD, and the internet erodes the attention span of the rest of us, I would expect books which offer smaller bites are an ideal reading retreat in a distracted world. What if there were simply a collection of articles which offered some thought-provoking insights into a somewhat random collection of topics? What if, in your own busyness you could consider a faith-focused subject with a three or four minute investment?

Not Dressed for the Occasion by Durham Region pastor Ron Harris (with Christine Winter) is one such book. The 71 articles are gathered here in a form the author says, “has no beginning and no end.” You can jump in anywhere and read as many or as few as time permits. The articles are somewhat devotional in nature — think something 3 to 5 times longer than Our Daily Bread, or The Upper Room — which allows more space to anchor the reading in more than one scripture text reference. Each piece is clearly written from a pastor’s heart.  Paperback, $17.99, in stock.

They’re not red tags because they’re not part of the Buy-4-get-1-Free offer but they represent our best attempt to remain competitive and save you money on books we are unable to source in paperback at this time. If a hardcover doesn’t have this new pricing, please feel free to ask if it’s possible.

We get a lot of requests for New Testaments in an easy-to-read type size. The solution has been on our shelves all along; the NLT Travelers Devotional Bible New Testament. These are beautiful faux-leather editions. Reg. up to $21.99; available in various colours, now only $11.99.

Spanish - Turn Your Vacation Trip into a Missions Trip

Heading to Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, or any other Spanish-speaking country?? Turn your vacation trip into a mission trip by leaving Spanish New Testaments and Bible promise books for hotel housekeeping staff; tour guides; and people you meet at local markets. We keep about 20-30 of these on hand at any given time; more can be easily ordered.

Not going anywhere? Remember the migrant workers on local farms. (Make sure ahead of time that Spanish is their first language!)

These wooden crosses make a great bulk purchase item:

The little wooden cross pendants (necklaces) are a great bargain; a bestseller at Searchlight for years. Great gifts for tweens, teens and young adults; though not recommended for small children. If you need a quantity, let us know so we have time to string them.

Bibles in many Languages:

We don’t have all the languages in the above image, but we do have in stock Bibles and/or other Christian literature in Spanish, Arabic, German, Chinese (trad.), Chinese (simplified), Italian, French, Tagalog, Persian, Korean, Greek (contemporary), Greek (classical), Japanese, Hindi and others, with access to about 100 more.

(re)Union: The Good News of Jesus for Seekers, Saints, and Sinners by Bruxy Cavey

You’ve got a friend who you’d like to see cross the line of faith. You want to sit down and be able to answer all their questions in a casual, non-threatening manner. Problem is, there’s aspects of your Christian pilgrimage that have left you less than articulate on various core doctrines. If only you had another friend who could join you at the coffee shop to make Christianity make sense.

Enter Bruxy Cavey [KAY-vee] teaching pastor at The Meeting House, an alternative, multi-site congregation in the greater Toronto area described as both “church for people who aren’t into church,” and also as “Canada’s fastest growing church network.” It’s been a decade since his 2007 title with NavPress, The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus.  Since then he’s become more strongly alligned with his tribe, the Brethren in Christ and more identified with pacifist denominations which clearly are a minority in the United States.

Years later, that irreligious message of Jesus turns up in Bruxy’s “The Gospel in 30 Words” which forms the core of the book.

  Remember our motto:

Information you need,
by authors who are proven,
from publishers we trust,
at prices you can afford.

We support local authors; books below are in-stock:

  • Catherine Hudson is known to many in this area for her My Bark Avenue dog obedience training program. In A Prophet’s Journal she shares visions and images God has given her and others.
  • Allan Connor was a retired missionary living in Port Hope who holds the record for the most sales by a local author at Searchlight for a previous title. Trail Mix is a collection of devotionals originally out by email subscription to friends across Canada.
  • Carol McMurray has been a customer of our store almost since the day we opened. Her book, Melting A Heart of Stone looks at the theme of hardness of heart throughout the Bible.
  • Ron Harris is a pastor in Durham Region. His book Not Dressed for the Occasion provides short takes on over 70 different subjects written in a style that’s as fresh as your daily news feed, but with devotional value.
  • Eric Wright‘s novel, Rust Bucket is the 3rd book in the Josh Radley suspense series. We also have several other titles by Eric. He attends Fellowship Baptist Church in Cobourg.
  • Michaela Peters has released The Sorcerer’s Revenge, a young adult novel that some adults are enjoying as well. Three years ago she was invited to New York to pitch the book as a Hunger-Games-type screenplay.
  • We also have local interest titles by Dr. Lee Beach former pastor of Cobourg Alliance Church, and Peterborough’s Judi Peers (her 10th title) who is well known in this area.

Did you know that getting the cheapest deal sometimes isn’t the best deal? At Searchlight, we work hard to keep prices low, but we work even harder to ensure you have an amazing experience with us. We want to see your life changed by God’s power and that’s why we run this bookstore, and quite frankly, that’s something that Amazon, iTunes or Netflix can never offer.

While we too appreciate the convenience and low cost that many big corporate retailers can provide, there are some incredible things that happen when you shop locally. Consider the following:

  • We are passionate about transformation and have become experts in the kinds of teaching and music that can bring change in your life.
  • The products we sell are filtered before they hit our shelves, and if something isn’t right for your doctrinal perspective, we’ll let you know ahead of time.
  • You get to see, touch, feel; interact with the product before you buy.
  • We’re also customers. Each of our staff are readers and music buyers.
  • We enhance the community, by providing distinctive options in our part of the world.
  • We support the local economy, your money stays here in Canada, and we hire local staff and use local tradespeople.
  • Surprise! You never know you’ll meet at the store.  You never know what resources you’ll find.
  • The owners don’t take a salary.  No one’s pockets are being lined when you shop here, we just sow everything back into the store. We also frequently bring in products that are 100% fundraisers such as God Enters Stage Left.

Please consider supporting Searchlight as your local Christian bookstore, and encourage others to think about the many benefits of buying local

We love church librarians!

For church libraries we have a program called 20/200/20 which saves your church money on purchases of 20 in-stock books or $200 worth of in-stock books; or on orders for 20 titles or orders of $200 or more. For our local churches, we have a program called WebMatch which competes aggressively with the best online sellers have to offer.

For Paul’s blogs visit Thinking Out Loud and Christianity 201.

For ChristianBook customers:

Recently we began a trial period of offering fulfilment for orders carts at ChristianBook for those of you who are familiar with them.  (Hey, if they’re going to run ads on our website, it seems only fair…)

You can add items to a ChristianBook cart, and then have the order completed by Searchlight. Simply add items and when you’re ready, instead of clearing the order through them, copy and paste the entire cart into an email and forward it to and we will do the rest.

Remember, CBD’s shipping cost to Canada is 25% and the current exchange rate on the U.S. dollar at the bank is about 29%. This means the CBD price in Canadian dollars is 1.627% higher than what you see on-screen. In some cases, Searchlight everyday pricing may work out cheaper, and if that happens, we’ll give you the lower of the two prices.

Be sure to add a phone number to your email where we can reach you when your order is complete. Also, please note that some CBD specials are limited time offers. Then delete the cart on their site.

Although we follow a business model, we consider ourselves one of several parachurch ministries operating in our community. PRAYER is always needed, and while you’re remembering us, pray for these ministries operating in our area:

Once things return to normal, Searchlight will continue to be a drop-off point for Christian Salvage Mission of Hamilton, Ontario.
