WELCOME to Searchlight Christian Resources. We’re located at 884 Division Street in Cobourg (a town about halfway between Oshawa and Belleville) just 2 minutes (three quick traffic lights) south of the 401. Our store is a full service Christian Bookstore, that is, we carry everything the big stores have, maybe just not so many copies. We’ve been 24½ years in Cobourg, but the business history of Searchlight goes back another 20 years before that.

We’re also a Christian book outlet store. About 75% of the books we receive are red-tagged bargain books, consisting of a mixture of publisher overstock and remainders. That means about half of our sale books are actually still in print at regular price elsewhere. To make the deal even more sweet, we offer an instant rewards program of Buy-4-Get-1-Free (lowest price items in each grouping of five drops out.)

What to expect: Cobourg is a small town which makes us a small town store. Two aisles at the front, three in the middle and one at the back. However, our store is packed with books. Specialty areas include fiction, family life, marriage and family issues, apologetics, children’s picture books; and we also have giftware, DVDs, greeting cards, boxed cards and a very up-to-date selection of various styles of Christian music on CD. This website is simply a random, representative sample of what we carry.

Curbside Pickup or Shop in-store

To find out if your church is open this weekend, click this link.

Open FIVE days a week TUESDAY thru SATURDAY for parking lot (curbside) pickup only, with limited store entry — one person at a time.

Limited hours: 11:00 – 3:00 Tues-Sat

We are overlapping in-store shopping with curbside pickup for people who know exactly what they want and would prefer not to enter the store or wear a mask.

Week of October 25th: People are exercising greater caution as the numbers rise provincially. Just in case, some are stocking up now on Christmas gifts. We encourage you to visit the store while you still can as we might be plunged back into curbside-pickup-only sooner than later, or perhaps even a full lockdown.

The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge Health Unit requires masks in retail stores such as ours. If this is something you do not wish to do, please specify CURBSIDE pickup (parking lot pickup) when you call in your order. (See further below* for more details.)

If you wish to enter the store, some guidelines we’ve put in place are:

  1. Mask required.
  2. ONE individual at a time where possible. Or a couple from the same household. Preferably adults-only, no kids.
  3. Use the HAND SANITIZER immediately on entry.
  4. If you have had any contact with anyone who suspects COVID-19 or you have been to the United States, or have other reasons to be self-isolating, PLEASE DON’T COME!
  5. We don’t have tap payment. The pin-pad will be STERILIZED before and after each use.
  6. Please try to create a 2-metre (6-foot) distance between you and staff behind the counter.
  7. We need to record your NAME and PHONE number for future contact tracing.
  8. The door handles going in and out will be sterilized before and after each entry as is the countertop.
  9. Please make efficient use of your time in the store if others are waiting.
  10. We cannot accept returns and exchanges at this time. This situation was made necessary by an incident which occurred recently. Please contact us with any issues. Remember that we are an outlet store and red-tagged items are generally sales-final.
  11. We cannot accept incoming CSM donations at this time.
  12. This page is updated as the need arises.

*If you wish to NOT enter the store, here’s a reminder of how we do curbside pickup:

  • Try to call ahead (905 372 5519 or email) to request the things you’re seeking, and then call again from the parking lot.
  • Keep calls short.
  • Parking lot (curbside) pickup should only be VISA and MasterCard sales. The only way to use the debit machine is to come in the store, and that’s available only if no one else is shopping at that point and you have a mask. (Or pay cash rounded to the nearest dollar.)
  • For curbside, no individual card sales; no T-shirts; no Bible cases or covers.

► If you would like the current edition of Our Daily Bread included in your pickup, please let us know when ordering. Regular and large print available.

In general:

  • Our opening time is going to stay at 11:00 for the present time; we simply can’t work long shifts wearing a mask.
  • You may continue to contact us via email: searchlightbooks@gmail.com
  • During this time we are not processing returns, exchanges, or accepting Christian Salvation Mission donations. No exceptions.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to our GoFundMe rent relief crowdfunding campaign.

PHONE: Give us a call at 905 372 5519 during business hours and we’ll tell you more. Out of area call us at 800 210 5661.

For those who came looking for directions to the bookstore, or were re-directed from Searchlightbooks.ca here’s a map showing where we are (red X at bottom) at 884 Division Street (on the east side) in Cobourg. We’re at the front of the building.

Taking the 401? From points west (Port Hope, Bowmanville, Oshawa, etc.) take exit 474-A. From the east (Brighton, Trenton, Belleville, Kingston, etc.) take exit 474 and turn left. Baltimore road becomes Division Street. The blue line on the map below is Highway 401.

Google and Facebook almost have the pin in the right place, we’re actually at the front of the building

GPS = 78.1727202,43.9758635,0

3 traffic lights south of westbound 401; 3 traffic lights south of eastbound 401; on left side: 884 Division Street, Unit 102, Cobourg K9A 5V3   Note to website readers in the GTA: Cobourg is about 70 minutes east of the DVP/404 and Highway 401. Praying Women: How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say – new from Sheila Walsh.

If you find yourself easily distracted when you pray, here are practical, biblically based tips to help you ignite your conversation with the Lord.

Although Sheila has written many books, she shared that none of her books have impacted her more personally than Praying Women. The new book is a departure from Sheila’s previous books, offering very practical steps to pray in the midst of storms, celebrations, trials and the everyday challenges of life. With her signature honesty, vulnerability, and encouraging spirit, Sheila uses personal stories, extensive research and biblical teachings to show that God is not looking for perfect words when praying or perfect people.

Coming early October from N.T. Wright:

In this follow-up to Simply Christian, today’s leading Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and acclaimed author uses the Gospel of John to reveal how Christianity presents a compelling and relevant explanation for our world.

N. T. Wright argues that every world view must explain seven “signposts,” indicators inherent to humanity: Justice, Spirituality, Relationships, Beauty, Freedom, Truth, and Power.

He contends that if we do not live up to these ideals, our societies and individual lives become unbalanced, creating anger and frustration—negative emotions that divide us from ourselves and from God. Using the Gospel of John, Wright shows how Christianity defines each signpost and illuminates why we so often see them as being “broken” and unattainable.

Beth Moore - Undoing of Saint Silvanus

Beth Moore’s FICTION title: Reg. $23.99; Sale $9.99

The Undoing of Saint Silvanus is a far cry from her nonfiction work, but faith still played a major role in the writing process, according to Beth Moore.

Located in New Orléans, Saint Silvanus was originally built during the 1800s as a church and was later converted to an apartment complex now run by Jillian’s estranged grandmother. While in town attending her father’s funeral, she meets an eclectic group of tenants from the building. As strange things begin happening, she finds out her father was actually murdered

It’s nearly 500 pages of Southern mystery and down-home colloquialism, reflecting Moore’s love of New Orleans.

The answer is all three! In the book, Camp recounts his impoverished childhood, rebellious teenage years, spiritual awakening, the tragic loss of his newlywed wife, and his second chance at love. Jeremy’s journey refined his faith—and will give you reason to hope in God. Revised edition features cover art from the movie.

Inspired Imperfection: How the Bible’s Problems Enhance Its Divine Authority

The New Testament in Its World is your passageway from the twenty-first century to the era of Jesus and the first Christians. A highly-readable, one-volume introduction placing the entire New Testament and early Christianity in its original context, it is the only such work by distinguished scholar and author N. T. (Tom) Wright.

An ideal guide for students, The New Testament in Its World addresses the many difficult questions faced by those studying early Christianity. Both large and small, these questions include:

  • What is the purpose of the New Testament?
  • What was the first-century understanding of the kingdom?
  • What is the real meaning of the resurrection in its original context?
  • What really were the Gospels?
  • Who was Paul and why are his letters so controversial?
  • As twenty-first-century people, how do we recover the excitement of what it was like to live as Christians in the first or second centuries?

In short, The New Testament in Its World brings together decades of ground-breaking research, writing, and teaching into one volume that will open readers’ eyes to the larger world of the New Testament. It presents the New Testament books as historical, literary, and social phenomena located in the world of Second Temple Judaism, amidst Greco-Roman politics and culture, and within early Christianity.

Prayer Cubes

Prayer Cubes are a fun — as in don’t take this practice too seriously — novelty product. You roll the prayer cube and pray the cube which comes up on top. The most popular of the three styles is “Mealtime Prayers.” The prayers themselves are okay, it’s just that “rolling the dice” isn’t how most of us want to approach talking to God. This also makes a great gag gift for the academic or theologian whose idea of prayer is slightly more scholarly…
…And they’re only $2.99.

ESV Value Edition.

Maybe you moved forward in faith, but now His presence is nowhere to be found. Welcome to the wilderness the place between receiving a promise from God and seeing it come to pass.
But here’s the good news―this is no purposeless wasteland. God uses the wilderness to prepare and equip you for your destiny―that is, if you navigate it correctly…”

Fire Will Strike the Earth

• Now available at Searchlight: A prophetic message translated by local author and former missionary Henry Buchegger.
• Henry published this at great personal cost, and Searchlight is relinquishing much of our normal retail margin to help out.
“In 1984 in Mexico City, the message in this book, written in Spanish on loose-leaf paper, was handed to me by a stranger, urging me to pass it on to as many people who might want it. She offered this message to me freely, and I gladly received it. I took the text home and translated it into English. Based on the Bible, this message is a wake-up call to all of humanity from a loving God. Thirty years ago the message didn’t seem as urgent to me as it clearly is today. Whether we realize it or not, the beginnings of God’s judgements on earth are already in progress…”

As more and more people are diagnosed with ADHD, and the internet erodes the attention span of the rest of us, I would expect books which offer smaller bites are an ideal reading retreat in a distracted world. What if there were simply a collection of articles which offered some thought-provoking insights into a somewhat random collection of topics? What if, in your own busyness you could consider a faith-focused subject with a three or four minute investment?

Not Dressed for the Occasion by Durham Region pastor Ron Harris (with Christine Winter) is one such book. The 71 articles are gathered here in a form the author says, “has no beginning and no end.” You can jump in anywhere and read as many or as few as time permits. The articles are somewhat devotional in nature — think something 3 to 5 times longer than Our Daily Bread, or The Upper Room — which allows more space to anchor the reading in more than one scripture text reference. Each piece is clearly written from a pastor’s heart.  Paperback, $17.99, in stock.

The Bible Book explores the ideas and beliefs key to the teachings of the most widely printed religious book of all time.

This highly visual, really BIG, 352-page hardcover book highlights more than 100 of the most important Biblical passages and explains their significance. Profiles of primary figures–from Adam and Eve, to Peter and Paul–and places of the Bible, such as Jerusalem and Rome, add context to the scriptures. Theological concepts, such as the Trinity, God’s omnipresence, and the importance of Jesus’ death, are explained in detail. Infographics illuminate the most significant concepts clearly and simply.

The Bible Book is perfect for anyone with an interest in religion and the foundational text of Christianity and Judaism.

(re)Union: The Good News of Jesus for Seekers, Saints, and Sinners by Bruxy Cavey

You’ve got a friend who you’d like to see cross the line of faith. You want to sit down and be able to answer all their questions in a casual, non-threatening manner. Problem is, there’s aspects of your Christian pilgrimage that have left you less than articulate on various core doctrines. If only you had another friend who could join you at the coffee shop to make Christianity make sense.

Enter Bruxy Cavey [KAY-vee] teaching pastor at The Meeting House, an alternative, multi-site congregation in the greater Toronto area described as both “church for people who aren’t into church,” and also as “Canada’s fastest growing church network.” It’s been a decade since his 2007 title with NavPress, The End of Religion: Encountering the Subversive Spirituality of Jesus.  Since then he’s become more strongly alligned with his tribe, the Brethren in Christ and more identified with pacifist denominations which clearly are a minority in the United States.

Years later, that irreligious message of Jesus turns up in Bruxy’s “The Gospel in 30 Words” which forms the core of the book.

Did you know that getting the cheapest deal sometimes isn’t the best deal? At Searchlight, we work hard to keep prices low, but we work even harder to ensure you have an amazing experience with us. We want to see your life changed by God’s power and that’s why we run this bookstore, and quite frankly, that’s something that Amazon, iTunes or Netflix can never offer.

While we too appreciate the convenience and low cost that many big corporate retailers can provide, there are some incredible things that happen when you shop locally. Consider the following:

  • We are passionate about transformation and have become experts in the kinds of teaching and music that can bring change in your life.
  • The products we sell are filtered before they hit our shelves, and if something isn’t right for your doctrinal perspective, we’ll let you know ahead of time.
  • You get to see, touch, feel; interact with the product before you buy.
  • We’re also customers. Each of our staff are readers and music buyers.
  • We enhance the community, by providing distinctive options in our part of the world.
  • We support the local economy, your money stays here in Canada, and we hire local staff and use local tradespeople.
  • Surprise! You never know you’ll meet at the store.  You never know what resources you’ll find.
  • The owners don’t take a salary.  No one’s pockets are being lined when you shop here, we just sow everything back into the store. We also frequently bring in products that are 100% fundraisers such as God Enters Stage Left.

Please consider supporting Searchlight as your local Christian bookstore, and encourage others to think about the many benefits of buying local

For ChristianBook customers:

Recently we began a trial period of offering fulfilment for orders carts at ChristianBook for those of you who are familiar with them.  (Hey, if they’re going to run ads on our website, it seems only fair…)

You can add items to a ChristianBook cart, and then have the order completed by Searchlight. Simply add items and when you’re ready, instead of clearing the order through them, copy and paste the entire cart into an email and forward it to searchlightbooks@gmail.com and we will do the rest.

Remember, CBD’s shipping cost to Canada is 25% and the current exchange rate on the U.S. dollar at the bank is about 36%. This means the CBD price in Canadian dollars is 1.723% higher than what you see on-screen. In some cases, Searchlight everyday pricing may work out cheaper, and if that happens, we’ll give you the lower of the two prices.

Be sure to add a phone number where we can reach you when your order is complete. Also, please note that some CBD specials are limited time offers.
